Summer Moorland Walking Leader Training

undefinedThis 2-day Summer Moorland Walking Leader training course is intended for those wishing to lead walking groups on single day expeditions within the South West’s moorland areas, such as Dartmoor and Brecon Beacons, in summer conditions. This award is part of the South West Moorland Leader (SWML) training scheme.

The course will include 2 nights accommodation staying within the Delaware Centre accommodation where we train various parts of the syllabus, including route planning and leader equipment. The course then takes you navigating onto open moorland for two days and one evening of poor visibility navigation training.

Candidates for this course should have significant walking experience in this type of environment before attending the training course. It is ideally suited to leaders involved with Ten Tors or Duke of Edinburgh leadership (D of E).

Pre-requisites for this training course

  1. Minimum age of 18
  2. Coastal and Countryside Assessment or Bronze National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) level equivalent skills
  3. Minimum of 2 nights camping including use of lightweight tents and stoves


The following syllabus content builds on the syllabus content of the Coastal and Countryside walking leader with camping endorsement award and is intended to build on the knowledge, skills and competence of leaders operating at that level.

Main topics to be covered include:

  • Route Planning for moorland expeditions
  • Group Management styles, including remote supervision
  • Interpreting weather forecasts
  • Equipment for both personal and group needs
  • Moorland navigation techniques, including: coarse and fine navigation, accurate use of a compass, poor visibility navigation and night navigation. Navigation training appropriate to the level of NNAS Silver level
  • Risk Management, associated with moorland walking
  • Access and conservation of the environment

At the end of the course delegates will be given an individual action plan to help guide in further development as a walking leader and to lead them towards a successful Summer moorland leader assessment.
