Summer Moorland Walking Leader with Camping Endorsement Training

Summer Moorland Leader with Camping Endorsement Training This 2-day Summer Moorland Leader with Camping Endorsement Training course is intended for those wishing to guide or lead walking and wild (remote) camping expeditions within the South West’s moorland areas, such as Dartmoor and Brecon Beacons, in summer conditions. This award is part of the South West Mountain and Moorland Leader (SWMML) scheme.

The course will involve an overnight wild camp as well as route planning, navigation in daylight and at night, and suitable equipment for leaders and participants.

Candidates for this course should have significant walking experience in this type of environment before attending the training course. It is ideally suited to leaders involved with Ten Tors or Duke of Edinburgh leadership (D of E).

Pre-requisites for this training course

  1. Minimum age of 18
  2. Coastal and Countryside Assessment or Bronze National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) level equivalent skills
  3. Minimum of 2 nights camping including use of lightweight tents and stoves

Syllabus

The following syllabus content builds on the syllabus content of the Coastal and Countryside walking leader with camping endorsement award and is intended to build on the knowledge, skills and competence of leaders operating at that level.

Main topics to be covered include

  • Route Planning for moorland expeditions
  • Group Management styles, including remote supervision tactics
  • Interpreting weather forecasts
  • Expedition equipment for both personal and group needs
  • Moorland navigation techniques, including: coarse and fine navigation, accurate use of a compass, poor visibility navigation and night navigation. Navigation training appropriate to the level of NNAS Silver level
  • Risk Management, associated with moorland walking and wild (remote) camping hazards
  • Load carrying and packing
  • Use of light weight stoves, tents and general remote camping organisation for groups on expedition
  • Access and conservation of the environment

At the end of the course delegates will be given an individual action plan to help guide in further development as a walking leader and to lead them towards a successful Summer moorland leader with camping endorsement assessment.
