Outdoor Activity Instructor Training Courses

We offer annual full-timepart-time outdoor instructor training courses throughout the winter season at Cornwall Outdoors. Courses are aimed at anyone who would like to train to become an outdoor activities instructor. If you cannot find the time to commit to one of our bigger courses this winter then try out one of our Guided NGB experiences in biking, walking or climbing

Kayak Instructor

With our team of highly skilled instructors we will provide ample opportunity for your outdoor leadership skills to develop and for you to finish the course with a bag of national governing body qualifications that you can use throughout the adventure activities industry.

Our Outdoor Instructor Training Courses for 2019/20

Part-time course held at the Porthpean Centre operates as a 2 days per week for 21 weeks from 14th October 2019 to 13th March 2020. This course provides a quality introduction to the outdoor industry and will provide enough experience for you to seek employment in the outdoor pursuits industry.

Part time Instructor Training Courses

This course includes:

  • British Canoeing (BC) 1 and 2 Star Awards
  • British Canoeing (BC) Foundation Safety and Rescue Award
  • British Canoeing (BC) Level 1 Paddlesport Instructor Award
  • British Canoeing (BC) 3 Star Sea Kayak Award
  • Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Level 2 Power Boat
  • National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS) Level 1 and 2
  • Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) Training
  • Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme (MIAS) Level 1
  • Mountain Medicine First Aid in the Outdoors Course

Full-time course held at the Delaware Centre operates as a 5 days per week for 16 weeks. This is an Outdoor Instructor Training & Assessment Course, commencing 28th October 2019 and finishing on 28th February 2020. This course is designed to provide aspirant outdoor instructors five high-level assessment awards by the end of your time with us. This means that you are ready to work in the outdoor industry by March 2020.

This course includes training and assessment for:

  • Mountain Training - Hill & Moorland Leader (HML)
  • Mountain Training - Expedition Skills Module (ESM)
  • Mountain Training - Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI)
  • Mountain-bike Instructor Award Scheme (MIAS) Level 1 & Level 2
  • Mountain-bike Cycle Fit-Inspect-Test (FIT) - Cycle mechanics.
  • Mountain Medicine First Aid in the Outdoors

Guided NGB Courses

You can sign up to any one of our Mountain Biking, Climbing or Walking NGB courses available on our winter programme. If you can find one or two days per week to join us, we will arrange your training to work alongside our full-time course students. This will mean that you always have people to work with while you progress through the course syllabus.

NVQ in Activity Leadership

If you are keen to get into the outdoor industry but haven't quite reached 18 then our free NVQ's in Activity Leadership may be just what you are looking for. These level 1 and level 2 NVQ's are designed around our adult courses and act as a natural step into the world of adventure activity instructors.

Interested? Continue to our Free NVQs for sixteen to eighteen year olds.

Our free NVQ courses are available for anyone aged between 16 and 18 years of age and can be undertaken at each of the three regional Centres of Cornwall Outdoors.  Along with your NVQ certification you will also gain some well sought after National Governing Body awards in adventure sports like NICAS, MIAS and British Canoeing Star Award.
