undefinedThis Winter Moorland Walking Leader Training course is intended  for those wishing to lead walking groups on day walks within the South West’s moorland areas, such as Dartmoor and Brecon Beacons, in winter conditions. This award, after assessment, is the highest-level award within the South West Moorland Leader (SWML) training scheme.

Pre-requisites for this training course

1. Minimum age of 18

2. Summer moorland walking leader assessment, or equivalent

 

Syllabus

The following syllabus content is additional to that of the Summer Moorland Walking Leader, and is intended to build on the knowledge, skills and competence of leaders operating at that level.

Leadership

  • Planning - Route planning, forecasting winter weather conditions and the resultant effect on the group and planned journey.
  • Equipment - Personal and emergency equipment
  • Navigation – Including confident and accurate navigation in poor visibility and darkness. To a moorland navigation standard equivalent to National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) Gold level.

Risk Management

  • Awareness of hazards associated with moorland walking in winter conditions
  • Coping with illness, injury and hypothermia
  • Emergency bivouac skills
  • Procedures relating to a remotely supervised group off route.

Access and Conservation

  • Awareness of damage to the upland environment in winter

 At the end of the course delegates will be given an individual action plan to help guide in further development as a walking leader and to lead them towards a successful winter moorland leader assessment.

It is a useful professional development opportunity for those involved in Ten Tors and Duke of Edinburgh leadership (DofE).
