RYA Powerboat Levels 1 & 2

If you use powerboats for leisure or work, or in connection with another activity such as sailing or rescue, then our RYA Powerboat Level 1 & 2 courses are for you.

Cornwall Outdoors is a provider of the RYA Powerboat Scheme that covers driving small open powerboats such as rigid inflatable boats RIBs, sports boats and small launches.

RYA Powerboat Course

The courses are split into two levels:

Definition of a powerboat covered in the scheme

Powerboats are generally powered by an outboard engine, do not normally have accommodation on board, and so are not intended for extended cruises. They may be used for short coastal or inland trips, fishing, and safety cover for other water sports, waterskiing or as a support boat for diving.


RYA Power boat level 1

Course Description

RYA courseThis is a one-day course providing the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat. This certificate is a gateway into the water sports industry (Dive Boat Driver, Ski Boat Drivers, Canoe/Kayak Umpires) and the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

It will include all aspects of preparation, from launching & recovery to safety equipment as well as your boat handling skills (propeller control and coming alongside), launching, recovery and picking up moorings. There is also a theory section to cover weather, Rules of the Sea (IRPCS) and rope work.

RYA Powerboat level 2

Course Description

RYA course

This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. This is the National Power Boat Certificate, which is a gateway into the water sports industry (Dive Boat Driver, Ski Boat Drivers, Canoe/Kayak Umpires) and the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

RYA Powerboat Course

This discipline will include all aspects of preparation, from launching & recovery to safety equipment as well as your boat handling skills (propeller control and coming alongside). It also includes; close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. There is also a theory section to cover weather, Rules of the Sea (IRCPS) and rope work.
