Become an Adventure Activities Instructor through our part-time instructor training course, based at Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre, in mid Cornwall. This 2-day per week course is designed to fit in with your current career and lifestyle commitments until you are ready to step into the new and exciting world of Outdoor Pursuits Instructor.
Porthpean Centre is ideally placed to make use of numerous top-quality climbing, canoeing, kayaking and mountain biking venues, as well as having a wide range of outdoor equipment for you to use on your training days. All you really need is the motivation to sign up for a fantastic winter of adventure activities training.
We have over 30 years’ experience in the outdoor industry with a proven track record in delivering high quality training. All of the training and qualifications we provide are nationally recognised, giving you the flexibility to work anywhere in the country.
The part time course will be based at Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre, St Austell and will run on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The centre is ideally placed to make use of the numerous top quality climbing venues; canoeing, kayaking, sea kayaking and powerboating are also well catered for with lakes, tidal rivers, sea, surf and white water all within easy reach; a proper watersports paradise!
We are also within easy reach of some of the finest moorland walking in the country and we are blessed with some excellent mountain bike trails, both artificial and natural.
Cornwall Outdoors is staffed by highly qualified and experienced instructors delivering high quality outdoor education on a daily basis to a wide range of clients.
It will be their job to ensure you have a worthwhile experience and that the course satisfies your requirements whether you want to simply experience the thrill of adventure sports, improve your existing skills or train to become a professional instructor.

Our structured programme of courses aims to provide the information, training, guidance and support necessary for you to go forward and achieve full accreditation in each of the outdoor instructor qualifications listed.
The programme is designed to appeal to those who want to gain experience in adventure activities or someone wishing to enter the outdoor industry as an instructor.
There may also be opportunities for you to gain invaluable experience with small groups of adventure seekers under the supervision of our own staff.

Prerequisites: None, however some experience would be a distinct advantage as all training and qualifications are dependent on ability and levels of learning
British Canoeing Paddlesport 1 and 2 star awards are about gaining the basic and intermediate skills to be able to paddle canoes and kayaks efficiently and safely in sheltered waters. These are the prerequisites for the UKCC level 1 waterbased coach award. Our training course will provide you with the training and skills to enable you to attain all the relevant pre-requisites for the UKCC Level 1 Coach.
The course content includes personal skills at the required level,safety and rescues,group management in water venues suitable to the level of award,leader equipment,weather,access and environment and dealing with emergencies.
At 3 Star the British Canoeing award scheme changes requires paddlers to gain proficiency in specific crafts in the paddle sport range for example open canoe, sea kayak, inland kayak. Depending on your previous experience within paddlesports we may be able to progress to 3 star (Sea Kayak) whilst on the programme.
The New BC/UKCC Level 1 Coach Award enables you to teach and coach alongside a Level 2 Coach or above where you can further your skills as a paddlesports coach. The prerequisites for Level 1 Coach will all be covered in the training course leading to the four UKCC Level 1 Coach programme.

The purpose of the Mountain Bike Instructors Award Scheme (MIAS) is to promote the safe enjoyment of mountain biking in an off-road environment. The programme provides training and assessment in technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in a variety of off-road environments in the UK, other than in winter conditions. It introduces training, experience and assessment in a variety of testing conditions in off-road country. The MIAS scheme is recognised throughout the UK and by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA). Successful completion of assessment allows you to be a leader of mountain biking in country parks, canal towpaths and low level rides on trails and bridleways. This award is for climbers who are in a position of responsibility when supervising climbing activities on indoor or outdoor climbing walls, artificial boulders and towers. This includes a wide range of structures utilised for these activities which will be referred to throughout these introductory notes as ‘walls.’ It is primarily concerned with ensuring good practice, leading to the safe enjoyment of climbing activities, and to an understanding of the sport. It covers the supervision and management of activities such as bouldering, the teaching of basic movement skills and roped climbing, excluding the teaching of leading.
To achieve the level required to attend the CWA training programme, additional time outside of your weekly course may need to be undertaken.
On completion of CWA Training , a natural progression would be for you to put yourself forward for the CWA Assessment (not included in this course).
The National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme is designed to introduce new climbers to climbing on artificial walls and structures. The Award Scheme aims to develop the skills, safety and knowledge required for indoor sport climbing and reflects personal climbing ability.
Level 1 - Foundation Climber
Level 2 - top Rope Climber
This is the National Power Boat Certificate, which is the gateway into the watersports industry (Dive Boat Driver, Ski Boat Driver, Canoe/Kayak Umpires) and basis of the International Certificate of Competence.
This discipline will include all aspects of preparation, from launching & recovery to safety equipment as well as your boat handling skills (propeller control and coming alongside). This course is a mix of theory and practical with a focus on providing first aid in the outdoor environment. Some practical elements will take place out of doors.
It is a 2 day course of 16 hours duration and therefore meets the requirements of the outdoor National Governing Bodies and the South West Moorland Leader Training Scheme. The course is certificated through Mountain Medicine.

The course fees include all training and registration fees to the appropriate National Governing Bodies (NGBs).
There are various payment options and payment can be spread out over the course duration. Water-based equipment will be supplied.
If you feel that you lack the personal outdoor equipment to participate, please do not let this prevent you from applying for this programme. The Centre will ensure that you are provided with the essential equipment needed to get you started. As you progress you will have time to choose and build on your equipment requirements when needed.
Cornwall Outdoors will also provide any safety equipment required for each activity, however if you have your own safety equipment you are welcome to bring it with you.
This programme does not automatically lead to employment but will enhance your employment prospects within the outdoor industry. Cornwall Outdoors has several seasonal vacancies each year that you would be eligible to apply for. Successful completion of any of our courses would give you the minimum qualifications required.
The qualifications and experience you gain on our programme will provide eligibility for most entry-level vacancies anywhere in this country.
